A PHOTOGRAPHERS VIEW OF SUOMENLINNA is based on Kari Hakli's work of the 1980s. Overa period of several years, Hakli recorded the views and interiors of the historic island fortress of Suomenlinna prior to renovation works. He wanted to explore the graceful ageing of the milieu, time becoming visible in the old buildings and structures. An old building will always prompt a pleasant sensation, a feeling of a contact with the past. The presence of time itself can be sensed in its surfaces, patina, corners, scratches and crevices.

Kari Hakli rediscovered Suomenlinna after having resigned himself to the idea that there was nothing old to be found in Helsinki. He had closely followed the worst aspects of the boom years by photographing endangered and disappearing historic milieus for the Helsinki City Museum. This was a time when buildings quarters and whole sections of the city were torn down. Suomenlinna, a listed World Heritage site, was spared all this. As a reservation of graceful ageing it has an important role in passing on a feeling of time.
