Early maps are fascinating evidence of the way in which people view the world and the way in which their beliefs in this respect have developed with time. This work aims to provide material which will give the reader an understanding of the world views implied by maps, to describe the development of the art of mapmaking and to trace the use of maps for thematic purposes. It contains articles by Finnish scholars on the history of maps, mapping and the world views presented maps, and at the same time in provides an introduction to the Nordenskiöld Map Collection. Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld built up one of the largest collections in the world of early maps published before 1800, a collection which has now been accepted for the UNESCO Memory of the World register of the human cultural heritage.
