Posters are a pleasant hobby for Esa Ojala, as they are to a number of other Finnish graphic artısts. Posters always allow a freer hand than other graphic design. After finishing his studies, Esa Ojala got a job with Marimekko. His six-year period there, among a group of strong-willed designers, has left a mark in his posters. The company was a great school for a young graphic artist. That is where he must have adopted the true blue-and-white Finnishness that I always seem to detect in his work. He builds his posters on a basis of clarity, structure and bright colours that reflect a fresh, crisp autumn day. But he taps other creative sources except design. His relationship with Nature, originating in his childhood years in the countryside, has been preserved all the way to the present day. The two contrasting realms of colour so eminent in Finnish nature - the white of winter snow and the all-pervasive - green of summer - are reflected in his creativeness. Perhaps the rationality of peasant culture also plays a role: there is nothing overdone. Likewise, Esa Ojala's posters are posters never overdone. (Ulla Aartomaa). Near Fine / Very Good. Item #4145
