96: Pohjoinen, 1996. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Text in Finnish and partly in Swedish and English. 95 pp. Scuffed dust jacket with a small tear.

Ben Kaila is a well-known documentary photographer whose works have had a major impact on the renewal of photographic expression in Finland. Kaila's visual language is sparse and restrained, more along the lines of observation than narration. There is also the basic undercurrent of respect for the subject, and of uncompromising honesty. Ben Kaila is engaged in the task of the outsider, whose speechless journeying as he calls his work, outlines a complete image of the world. The individual photographs become parts of a whole. Ben Kaila became publicly known in Finland through his photographic exhibition Finnish Migrants' (1972). This poignant statement on the lives of Finnish migrant workers in Sweden received the State Prize for Photography. Kaila has worked as a teacher and instructor of photography, as a picture editor and as a freelance photographer. He was one of the founders of the Saftra group of photographers and the alternative Gorilla Photo Agency. Near Fine / Very Good. Item #5007
