For more than one hundred years, since the end of the 16th century, Orthodox Karelian population emigrated from the former Kexholm province, driven by wars between Sweden and Russia and political and religious pressure, and settled in areas north of Moscow that had been depopulated by wars, crop failures, and plague. The People of Bear River in Tver Karelia by Mikko Savolainen uses the art of photography to tell of the present life of the descendants of one group of the immigrants who live along the Medvyeditsa River ("Bear River"), a tributary of the Volga River. An article by Matti Jeskanen, Finnish lecturer of The University of Tver, on the colorful history of Tver Karelians gives Savolainen's photographic report historical perspective and depth.
