Surrealism
25: Phaidon, 2004. Hardcover. Text in English. 304 pp. Some scraches on the dust jacket.
Surrealism was the twentieth century's longest lasting revolution in the arts. From the 1920s to the 1960s and beyond, its writers and artists constantly renewed their commitment to unravel the materialistic, utilitarian values they held responsible for the catastrophes of world war. The Surrealists aspired to a form of liberation which would emerge from the dialogue of the conscious with the unconscious mind. Readers and viewers were invited to join them on their forays in the 'forest of signs' revealed via psychoanalysis, twentieth-century science, philosophy and popular culture, with its collective symbols and myths. Surrealism's legacies continue to pervade much of contemporary art, literature, film and experience itself. This comprehensive survey presents alongside the art and writings canonized by earlier historians, significant works which have been rediscovered and reappraised by scholars, archivists and curators over several decades. Many of the Surrealists' writings have been specially translated for this volume by Mary Ann Caws and Jonathan Eburne. Near Fine / Very Good. Item #5339
