The Founding of Singapore 1819
113: National Library Singapore, 2012. Hardcover. Text in English. 231 pp. Slightly bumped lower corners. Minor edge wear and rubbing to the dust jacket.
The book traces the events leading to the foundation of Singapore in 1819 and examines the roles played in its foundation by Sir Stamford Raffles, the Governor-General, Marquess of Hastings, and Major William Farquhar, first British Resident and Commandant.
The account is based largely on Raffles's unpublished private letters to Lord Hastings preserved in The Bute Collection at Mount Stuart, Isle of Bute, Scotland.
The letters are fully transcribed in the book, together with Raffles's private letters to the Marquess of Lansdowne in the National Library Singapore. Together, they throw considerable new light on the founding of Singapore and on the attempts made by Raffles to extend British influence and power in the Malay Archipelago.
Also examined in the book is the opposition of the East India Company and the India Board of Control to Raffles's expansionist policies and to his assumed role of Political Agent while he was Lieutenant-Governor of Fort Marlborough (Bengkulu) in west Sumatra. Near Fine / Near Fine. Item #5627
