The photographs and poems in Fugue capture the delicate and shifting beauty of the Finnish landscape. The seasonal cycle and the continually altering light are important elements in the Finnish response to nature. The polar night and the white nights of summer are the extremes Fugue moves between. This is a rare, fervent and delicate depiction of the Finnish landscape and weather.
Caj Bremer is a photographic journalist, an acknowledged master whose assignments have taken him around the world. In Fugue he has chosen to concentrate on his own locality, the countryside of Sipoo, on the southern coast of Finland, about thirty miles east of Helsinki. His medium has been colour photography and an 18 x 24 camera. Bremer has served as photographer with the weekly Viikkosanomat and the daily Helsingin Sanomat, among other journals. He was a granted an honorary professorship of art in 1978, a distinction that, in Finland, runs for five years with full emoluments. His other awards include the State Prize for Photography and the Documentation Prize.
In Kai Nieminen's poem-sequence, the scasons and the atmospheres recur in a series of variations. A recognised master of the word and phrase, Kai Nieminen has published ten volumes of poetry and numerous translations of Japanese lyrical poetry and prose, as well as plays and radio plays. He has been awarded the State Prize for Literature five times. Fine / Very Good. Item #575
