Bridging the Future : General History of the University of Art and Design Helsinki 1973-2003
115: Ilkka Huovio, 2009. Hardcover. Text in English. 315 pp.
The University of Art and Design Helsinki (UIAH) was awarded a university status in July 1973, making the institution a university also officially. Unofficially, it had already been that since 1949 when the Central School of Arts and Crafts became the Institute of Industrial Arts. Originally, the operations of the institution had begun in 1871 when the School of Arts and Crafts was established
In his previous study, Invitation from the Future, the author lkka Huovio showed that the establishment of the UIAH was the result of a long process. Even though the new university first seemed to become a stage of restless university politics, radicalism and difficult conflicts, it succeeded in finding new directions and in starting to "build bridges to the future". This history of the UIAH shows that the talented teachers, artists researchers and students were able to ensure the continuity of high-quality education and success despite scarce material resources.
The history tells an interesting story of the development of Finnish educational policies and its effects on the UIAH. For the first time ever, it illustrates the early phases of doctoral studies and the first groping attempts at research. It also reveals how important the continuous improvement of applied art education is and what kind of possibilities it has in a world of increasing internationality. The book is a useful guide to the growing internationalism of the institution ever since 1871. There are also descriptions about the development of audiovisual research and education. Moreover, the book illustrates the new leadership principles aiming at quality, operations management and organisational changes in the UIAH. The pedagogy in design education is analysed especially from the point of view of networking and problem-based learning. The book also contains information on the premises solutions as well as on the construction of the new Lume building (1999) and Aralis library (2003).
The history of the UIAH 1973-2003 is one of the basic works of the history of Finnish education. It is a general portrayal based on extensive basic research – one of the first in the world in the area of applied art education, It changes the present views in many respects and gives new perspective to the development of our culture. The abundant illustrations in the book are carefully selected and rare. Fine. Item #6584
