Publishing, Books and Reading in Sub-Saharan Africa : A Critical Bibliography

38: Hans Zell Publishing, 2008. 3rd Edition. Hardcover. Over four decades Hans Zell has observed, recorded, and nurtured book publishing in sub-Saharan Africa – as director of the University of Ife Press in Nigeria in the 1970s, since then as author and frequent adviser, and for twenty-seven years as founding editor of the African Book Publishing Record, the continent’s pre-eminent bibliographic and book-trade quarterly. No one else knows the field as he does. This large new work is the culmination of his career.

It offers far more than the subtitle suggests. Zell has read nearly all the 2500-plus books, articles, reports, and theses listed and has carefully annotated them with abstracts of up to 300 words, indicating their significance as well as their content. As a result, Publishing, Books and Reading in Sub-Saharan Africa provides a unique series of snapshots of the book trade in eastern, western, and southern Africa. For a bibliography, it is an uncommonly good read.
