Stefan Bremer : Helsinki by Night
136: Parvs, 2025. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Stefan Bremer (b. 1953) is a leading name in Finnish photographic art. He began his career photographing punks, Teddy Boys and black-lipped goths in Helsinki's nightlife. As the city began opening up to new influences during the frenetic late 1970s and early 1980s, Bremer and his camera never missed a beat: wherever new subcultures were emerging, he was there, with his finger on the pulse of the times. In the early 1980s, he achieved renown as a photographer of alternative youth subcultures and the rock ‘n' roll scene, boldly establishing intimacy with his subjects in concert crowds. His nocturnal wanderings resulted in the legendary Fellini-esque cavalcade of images known as the Helsinki by Night series, which ranks among the most celebrated achievements of Bremer's career.
The "Helsinki by Night" photo book was released with the major retrospective exhibition that opened at Villa Hakasalmi in Helsinki. In addition to Bremer's photographs, the book includes texts by renowned Finnish authors Kjell Westö and Rosa Liksom, who share their memories of Helsinki.
