Devan Shimoyama : Fade Cut

135: Parvs, 2024. 1st Edition. Hardcover. American artist Devan Shimoyama (b. 1989) explores themes of sexuality, race, and gender through his carnival-inspired works. His art merges childhood experiences, queer identity, mythology, and art history into a vibrant, layered practice. Technically, his pieces are playful and experimental: Shimoyama fearlessly incorporates diverse materials into his paintings, including glitter, fabric, and rhinestones, and he also creates large-scale installations.

Fade Cut features works from Shimoyama’s Barbershop series, in which he transforms the hyper-masculine African American barbershop into an imagined queer fantasy. The installation, acclaimed in the United States, creates a welcoming, fictional space where people from all walks of life can freely express themselves. The book includes reflections on Shimoyama’s themes by Serlachius Museums director Pauli Sivonen, collections and exhibitions manager Laura Kuurne, and the artist himself.

This publication is connected to Fade Cut: Devan Shimoyama’s Barbershop Project, held at the Serlachius Museums, Mänttä, Finland, 23 March – 18 August 2024.
