Open Group : Repeat After Me
135: Parvs, 2025. 1st Edition. Hardcover. How can the horrors of war be conveyed empathetically without showing destroyed cities or mangled bodies? The Ukrainian artist collective Open Group explores this in their video installation Repeat After Me, designed like a karaoke setup, where Ukrainian civilians who have fled Russia’s illegal invasion perform in front of the cameras. They mimic the sounds of missiles, artillery barrages, and other weaponry, inviting exhibition visitors to repeat the sounds after them.
The memories of violence, the emotions tied to bombings, and concrete survival strategies resonate with visitors who have not experienced war firsthand. In the book, Serlachius Museums director Pauli Sivonen discusses Open Group’s work with Ukrainian art historian and curator Olga Tykhonova.
